    Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Wednesday that the philosophy of 'Bangladeshi nationalism' introduced by former president Ziaur Rahman and his ideology created strong inspirations in the minds of the country's people.

    "The spirit of our national independence and unity (national) and preserving multiparty democracy are being sourced from the spirit of his 'Bangladeshi nationalism," Mirza Fakhrul viewed in a statement issued to the media on Wednesday marking the 43rd death anniversary of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman to be observed today (Thursday).

    He also said that the proclamation of the country's independence by Ziaur Rahman created inspiration in the minds of the then independence and freedom-loving people.

    "He (former president Ziaur Rahman) stood in favour of people and the country during all national crises," Mirza Fakhrul maintained.

    Lt. General Ziaur RahmanBUHJ (19 January 1936 – 30 May 1981), was a Bangladeshi military officer and politician who served as the President of Bangladesh from 1977 to 1981. He was assassinated on 30 May 1981 in Chittagong in an coup d'état staged by some of his colleagues in army.

    Rahman was a Bangladesh Forces Commander of BDF Sector 1 initially, and from June as BDF commander of BDF Sector 11 of the Bangladesh Forces and the Brigade Commander of Z Force from mid-July during the country's Independence war from Pakistan in 1971.
