Brian Elwin Haner Sr. (born April 7, 1958), also known as Guitar Guy or Papa Gates, is an American musician, comedian, and author. Haner is known for touring with fellow stand-up comedian/ventriloquist Jeff Dunham, as in the 2008 holiday program, Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special. He is also a noted session musician for Avenged Sevenfold, a band in which his son, Brian Haner Jr. (a.k.a. Synyster Gates), is the lead guitarist.

He was born with the full name Brian Elwin Haner, Jr. or better known as Synyster Gates, born in Huntington Beach, California, United States on July 7, 1981. Brian is the first child. He has younger siblings named Brent, Johnny, and McKenna. His father, Brian Elwin Haner Sr. (commonly called Papa Gates), is a professional comedian and guitarist. His biological mother’s name is Jan. His stepmother, Suzy Haner, is a hypnotist.
Brian got his first guitar from his grandmother and grandfather. One of the first songs he learned was Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven. When Brian was in the 6th grade, he could already guess the chords of a song using only his hearing. After Brian was given a guitar, he said that school was pointless. He only got good grades until he was in 4th grade.
Brian entered the band Avenged Sevenfold as a guitarist when he was 18 years old in late 1999. He also played piano on “Beast and the Harlot” and “Sidewinder”. He created his first song titled “So Far Away” in memory of Avenged Sevenfold’s best friend and drummer, James Owen Sullivan or better known as The Rev who died on December 28, 2009.
