To write this article, I contacted investigative journalist Stephen Michaud, who once spent a lot of time with the couple after Bundy’s final arrest in Florida. In 1980, he interviewed the handcuffed serial killer for hundreds of hours in a stagnant, windowless room at the Florida State Prison for what would later become his bestselling book, The Only Living Witness. The author proved to be a rich source of insight into their bizarre relationship, as he’d been in especially close contact with Carole during the murder trials in 1979 and 1980.
