Born on May 31, 1970, in Naples, he is one of the most acclaimed directors, screenwriters, and writers of contemporary cinema. He has become a prominent figure in the international film scene. His life was marked by a tragic event during adolescence: at the age of 16, he lost both parents, who died in a domestic accident caused by a gas leak while they were at their holiday home. Sorrentino was saved thanks to a coincidence: he decided to stay in Naples to watch a football match of his idol, Diego Armando Maradona. This episode profoundly affected his personal and professional life. After high school, he enrolled in the faculty of economics but soon realized that his true calling was cinema.

I have photographed Paolo Sorrentino a number of times over the past five years, getting to know him better as his awards campaign for TheHand of God ramped up from Venice through to the Oscars. But I truly connected with him when he was kind enough to request me to do the print element of a Dolce & Gabbana fragrance campaign he was directing, starring Katy Perry, in Capri last summer.
So when I got a call this August from Paolo saying, ‘I’m shooting this feature film, would you like to come and visit the set in Capri?’, I jumped at the opportunity. I said I’d volunteer my services if they’d put me up in my favourite hotel!
