    This narrative is a tribute from author Toyomi Igus to the two most important women in her life, her grandmother and her real mother (one Japanese and on African American.) The narrative tells a story of a little girl growing up with these two women, and the impact the women made in her life. The descriptive language the author uses to describe the two women is fantastic. One Mrs.Gibson is "Tall with skin the color of chocolate" whereas, the other Mrs.Gibson is "Small, with skin the color of vanilla." The narrator describes the differences between the two women, but also describes that these women both love the little girl the same. One Mrs.Gibson "cooks greens" and the other Mrs. Gibson "cooks rice." One Mrs.Gibson gives hugs that "feel like you are being wrapped in a big fat bearskin rug" whereas the other Mrs. Gibson gives hugs that are like "being wrapped up in a light-down filled comforter." A former editor and publications director for UCLA’s Center for African-American Studies, Igus has been writing for kids since the early ’90s.

    Her mission as a children’s book author is to “generate work that educates and enlightens young people.” For years, she has done just that. In 2004, Igus was inducted into the Western New York Women’s Hall of Fame for promoting literacy among children.

    Before becoming a children’s book author, you were a magazine journalist. Please tell us about your journey to children’s book writing. How did your first picture book, When I Was Little, illustrated by Higgins Bond(Just Us Books), come to be? What was your break?

    I left magazines and started publishing books for the Center for Afro-American Studies at UCLA as its managing editor.  I met Wade and Cheryl Hudson (of Just Us Books) and other black book publishers at the book conventions we attended. We started talking and one thing led to another. . .
