NEWPORT — It’s a world away from his beautiful seaside town of Sochi, Russia, to this City by the Sea but it’s a trip Yevgeny Kafelnikov will never forget.

Once the top-ranked tennis player in the world, Kafelnikov is the latest star of yesteryear to step on the grounds of the Newport Casino for the first time and melt. This had nothing to do with Saturday’s 90 degree steam bath.

“Unless you see it yourself for the first time, you have no idea,” a wide-eyed Kafelnikov said.

Along with fellow grand slam winners Mary Pierce and Li Na, Kafelnikov was welcomed into the International Tennis Hall of Fame this weekend. He had never been to Rhode Island before and only heard about the grass courts and historical tennis museum on Bellevue Avenue from friends. When he finally saw this Rhode Island jewel, he couldn’t believe it.

“I was really stunned as I walked up the stairs and you see the museum. All the items, from the first tennis rackets to the medals from the Olympics,” he said. “It’s mind-boggling.”
